Fire Chief - City Of San Luis Obispo, California

San Luis Obispo (SLO) is at the heart of California’s majestic Central Coast.  It is midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.  SLO covers 13.6 square miles and is the largest city in San Luis Obispo County, and serves as the county seat.  The 47,000 residents enjoy a perfect Mediterranean climate and endless outdoor recreation activities.  The City’s charming downtown is filled with exceptional restaurants, shopping, galleries, and an award-winning Farmers Market.  SLO is also a well-known vacation and visitor destination and home to California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly).  The San Luis Obispo Fire Department is a full-service all-risk fire agency composed of 63.5 personnel. 

The City is seeking an experienced leader who will continue the community focused service delivery provided by the Department’s talented staff.  The new Fire Chief will lead a department that is collaborative, focused on implementing service delivery changes, and well thought of in its highly engaged community.  The Chief reports directly to the City Manager.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Technology, Business or Public Administration, or related field, at least five years of fire management experience. A Master’s degree is preferred.  State Fire Executive Chief Officer and National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer certification desired.  The annual salary range is $177,164 to $221,468 DOQE.  The City provides an outstanding benefits package.
