The County of Sonoma, located in the heart of Northern California’s Wine Country, is seeking its next County Executive. Covering more than 1,600 square miles and home to nearly 500,000 residents, Sonoma County is known for its scenic redwood forests, rolling vineyards, and a breathtaking coastline. Nine cities, five federally recognized tribes, and vibrant unincorporated communities form a region celebrated for its historic architecture, small-town charm, diverse economy, and quality of life.
The County of Sonoma is a general law county governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. With 29 departments, agencies, and special districts and a FY 2025-26 budget of $2.71 billion, the County delivers a full spectrum of programs and services while advancing the pillars of its 2021–2026 Strategic Plan - Climate Action and Resiliency, Healthy and Safe Communities, Racial Equity and Social Justice, Resilient Infrastructure, and Organizational Excellence.
The County Executive, appointed by and reporting directly to the Board of Supervisors, serves as the County’s chief administrative officer, providing strategic leadership, fiscal and operational oversight, and professional policy advice. The Board and community seek a collaborative, inclusive, and trusted leader, one who is politically astute, culturally competent, and grounded in integrity and transparency. The ideal candidate will foster organizational excellence, strengthen relationships, and ensure effective, equitable delivery of services that improve the lives of all who live and work in Sonoma County.
Qualified candidates will typically possess related coursework and at least five years of executive-level leadership experience, including planning and executing programs, budgeting, and coordinating diverse functions. At least two years of experience working with or reporting to a legislative body or policy-making board is essential.
The annual salary range is $324,067–$393,902 DOQE, plus an excellent benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; retirement under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937; defined contribution savings plans; and generous leave.
