County Manager - San Miguel County, Colorado

Located in southwest Colorado, San Miguel County (pop. 8,000, 1289 sq. mi.) has stunning scenic beauty and a rich, colorful history. From the dramatic San Juan Mountains and world-class skiing in incomparable Telluride (county seat) in the east to the high-desert ranches and farms stretching west to the Utah border, San Miguel County is geographically and socio-economically diverse, and a state and national treasure.

Three commissioners elected to four-year, staggered terms govern the County. Since 2016, commissioners are limited to two consecutive terms. Currently the County employs 123.9 FTEs. The FY 2019 budget is $28.7 million (GF $11.9 million).

After 24 years of successful service, the County’s County Administrator (n.k.a. County Manager) is retiring. The County Commissioners are committed to finding an expert replacement.

A four-year degree in a relevant field of study, preferably public administration, political science or business administration; seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in local government, including five as a county or municipal manager are required. Candidates with the requisite tenure who serve as deputy or assistant managers or major department heads may be considered. A graduate degree is desirable. Residency in San Miguel County is strongly preferred. The initial annual salary range for this position is $140,000 to $165,000.  Relocation assistance and housing allowance subject to negotiation.
